Leech jars, also known as leech bowls, were specialized vessels used by apothecaries and physicians from the 18th through the 19th centuries for storing live medicinal leeches. These jars were essential tools in the practice of bloodletting, a common medical treatment believed to cure a variety of ailments by removing 'excess' blood from the patient.
Typically made of glass or ceramic, leech jars often featured a distinctive bulbous shape with a narrow neck to prevent the leeches from escaping. Some jars included perforated lids or internal structures to provide the leeches with air and a suitable environment.
